In June 2013 Paul was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL). ALL is a type of aggressive blood cancer that occurs very suddenly (in a matter of days or weeks). It is very rare in adults and fatal without treatment. The treatment (high doses of chemotherapy and radiation, as well as a bone marrow transplant) is also risky and potentially life threatening. Side effects of chemotherapy are often debilitating (extreme fatigue, sickness and muscle pain.
Paul has to visit the Princess Alexandra hospital in Brisbane many days a week for treatment and check ups, and often needs to be admitted when the dose of chemotherapy is very strong or side effects become too severe. Paul is lucky to have a sister who is a match to be a bone marrow donor. He had a Bone Marrow Transplant in January 2014 at the Royal Brisbane Hospital. Without the transplant there was a very high risk of relapse and much shorter life expectancy. So, while risky, the bone marrow transplant will give Paul the best chance of survival and best possible opportunity to live a long, healthy and happy life free from cancer in the future.
After the transplant (which will take 100 days to complete) he will need 6 to 12 months of follow up treatment, during which time he will not be able to work as normal. Paul is an avid computer buff, his partner Kim nominated him to receive a laptop computer to help him cope and be in touch with his family and friends whilst he's in hospital and also immerse himself into something he enjoys and concentrate on something other than his illness.
Upon hearing about Paul's journey the wonderful and incredibly generous team at NGage Technology Group Pty Ltd came onboard and donated not just any laptop, but a state of the art Apple Mac Book Air 11 laptop computer for Paul. They not only donated this amazing laptop, they are also flew from Melbourne to Queensland to be personally deliver it to him! Incredible hey! See the video on the left.
Thank you so much to Brent and Jarrod from NGage - your compassion for Paul is so heart warming and we The Orange Pigeon are so very touched by your kindness.
