Imagine my shock and surprise when I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Colorectal Carcinoma - bowel cancer. I had just turned 40 and was in for the fight of my life.
During my diagnosis, surgery and chemotherapy I kept a journal. I am sharing my story to support people who are going down the same path. I can empathise with them. I can also answer questions for those who are about to embark on this journey. There are many things the medical professionals do not tell you - or you are so overwhelmed you have forgotten. I would also like to speak out about the importance of and to encourage people to be screened for bowel cancer. It may just save your life.
This is my story. I am frank. I am honest. I will make you laugh and I will make you cry.

Born without the lower half of his left leg, young Don Elgin never considered himself disabled until he was in high school – and even then, he had to be convinced. His story, of a boy from the bush who battled the odds and finally stepped onto the podium as a medallist at the Sydney Paralympics, is one of absolute inspiration. Driven by an inherited sense of grit, determination and pure guts, Don overcomes an abundance of obstacles to rise to the top of the sporting heap. His life’s philosophy tells us that success is not a birthright - it’s earned.
